About The Hiphocalypse
The Hiphocalypse is not only a dope hip hop show…it’s an even doper hip hop movement.
The Hiphocalypse is a MOVEment of African Hip Hop incorporating The Hiphocalypse Radio Show. THE HIPHOCALYPSE© is a radio show on the Rhodes University campus radio station Rhodes Music Radio (RMR) started in August 1999.
The name HipHocalypse was derived from the concept of a hip hop induced Apocalypse. The end of the world as we know it…and hip hop music is the voice of the revolution in the apocalypse – hence: HIPHO-CALYPSE! (pronounced hipo-kalips).
We seek to “tune today’s society out of their channel zero” by opening their third metaphysical eye through hip hop music. We also focus on the promotion of Local (and) international positive hiphop acts through our radio show and web hosting on http://www.myspace.com/hiphocalypse.
Here you will find information on all things Hiphocalypse related including Album Reviews, Playlists, Downloads, News etc. Feel free to browse the site and let us know what you think by emailing us (details on the feedback page). Join the HIPHOCALYPSE Today or get blown away!!!
Also visit: The HIPHOCALYPSE on youtube for exclusive footage from various South African hip hop events.
Just a little note on heads who have been part of the Hiphocalypse movement…
Spliff
Grahamstown/Joburg
Your Boy Spliff is a radio DJ and Producer, Listener, Student and Hip hop journalist.
He is the current host of the Hiphocalypse on Rhodes Music Radio 89.7fm Grahamstown’s sickest frequency. He has been a follower of the movement for more than 6yrs. And his love for hip hop in its different forms started while back in the 90s, Resurrection by Common, East 99 Bone Thugs (feel me?). And his passion for African Hip Hop can be traced back to YFM’s legendary Rap Activity Jam. HARAMBE!!!!
Radio and the Hiphocalypse was a natural progression and the movement needed resuscitation after Rob One left Rhodes, so Spliff gave it First Aid! Hosted the Saturday Stick Up for 4yrs, and thought the ‘Real Hip Hop’ needed representation on air, and on the net hence the BLOG….holla Qhakaza!
Shout Out to the Founders/the teachers and God’s Gift to Hip Hop Radio/my Boy! One Love…
From The Reviver!!!
Sensai Tate
Denver, Colorado
Co-founder & former on-air DJ of the HIPHOCALYPSE (2000 – 2003).
A Zimbabwean native who has always been a lover of hip hop art & culture. First got involved in the global hip hop phenomenon at age 16 rhyming under the pseudonym “KraiZ-E” in a crew called 3 man group called the “Hip Hop Henchmen (HHH)” in Harare.
Put out a video mixtape titled “Homeboy TV” featuring music videos and HHH rhyming over popular 90’s tracks like the Westside Connection’s “Bow Down” and Dr Dre’s “Eastside Killer/ Westside Killer” beat.
First real noteworthy achievement was establishing the HIPHOCALYPSE radio show with housemate Nkanyiso “So” Mthembu on the student broadcast station Rhodes University, Rhodes Music Radio (RMR), in Grahamstown South Africa in February of 2000.
The show grew from strength to strength into a MOVEment of local hip hop heads gathering critical acclaim & listenership from all over Grahamstown & surrounding areas. Awarded the inaugural RMR “Show of the year award” in 2003 for outstanding community contribution. The Show is now a permanent feature on the RMR line-up 7.5years running!
Eventually landed a couple of DJ spots at local nightclubs and releasing 2 independant mixtape compilation CD’s titled the HIPHOCALYPSE Mixtape (2004)& HIPHOCALYPSE Re-mixtape (2005). Currently syndicating (not so regular) podcasts showcasing (mainly) SouthERN African hip hop artists coming up. PAMBERI (Forward)!
